wedding photography prices

My most asked question asked by my prospects is about wedding photography prices.  I would too since we are all under budget and money is a limited resource, especially when planning a wedding.  This is what I can tell you from my journey as a well established pro wedding photographer:

Photographers charge what they are worth.  I charged $200 to shoot my first wedding!  I had no experience and very little equipment.  Pretty  much a camera and a flash, much like the one your uncle has.  It took me a month to edit it and it was atrocious.  As I gained more experience, studied more and got better equipment I raised my prices in order to further develop my skills as well as my education and training, as well as more and more equipment.

Why is wedding photography cost so high for just one day's work?  The wedding day is only one day out of many days of work:  Wedding photography involves several days of editing, album design, meetings and engagement shoots.  I typically spend 40 hours altogether on each wedding.  Wedding photography prices also include the fact that most weddings are in the fall and spring, so we only have so many weekends available for so many couples that want the same few dates available.  Winter and summer weddings are not as common.

How much should I spend on my wedding photography?   It depends on how important it is to you.  If you are not a photo person, and just need coverage, any less than $1000 wedding photographer would do, as long as you don't need indoor coverage.  Good equipment is required for dark situations.  $2500 photographers are up and coming semi pros who are still trying to buy more equipment and get more training in order to charge more and quit their day job.  This group is hit or miss due to their limited experience and might be inexperienced in difficult and unusual circumstances.  $3500 and up photographers are veterans who have seen it all and are very comfortable with the test of photographing weddings.  They have the right equipment, assistants and or second shooter photographers and at least 100 weddings under their belt.

Let me know if there's any other questions you might have!
